The Value of Community Shared Goals
Published November 6, 2026
Shared goals give community activity direction while leaving space for different motivations, contributions, and paths toward progress.
A shared goal helps members understand why their separate contributions belong together. It should guide choices without requiring everyone to want exactly the same thing.
Describe the goal in concrete language. Members need to know what improvement or outcome the community is working toward.
Name who benefits. A clear audience helps the group evaluate whether an idea serves the people it intends to support.
Break the goal into stages. Smaller milestones make progress visible and create more opportunities for participation.
Allow different roles. Research, organization, communication, review, and encouragement can all contribute to the same outcome.
Review the goal when circumstances change. A community should be able to refine its direction without treating revision as failure.
Shared goals create alignment. They help members coordinate while preserving the different experiences and reasons that brought them to the work.
