The Value of Community Case Studies

Published November 6, 2026

Case studies turn community experience into practical learning by showing context, decisions, results, and lessons.

A case study can preserve more than a success story. It can show what a community tried, why it made certain choices, what changed, and what it would do differently next time.

Begin with the original situation. Explain the need or problem without pretending that the final solution was obvious from the start. Context helps readers decide whether the experience applies to them.

Describe the decisions that mattered. Include the options considered, the constraints involved, and the reasons one path was chosen. The process is often more useful than the final result.

Share outcomes honestly. Include what improved, what did not change, and which results are difficult to measure. A balanced account is more trustworthy than a story that presents every decision as perfect.

Protect people’s privacy. Remove identifying details that are not necessary and ask permission before publishing personal experiences. Learning should not require exposing someone who did not agree to be part of the case study.

End with transferable lessons. Identify what another community could adapt, what depends on local conditions, and which questions remain open.

Case studies create institutional memory. They help new members understand how a community learned and give future organizers a starting point instead of requiring them to repeat every experiment.
