The Role of Community Translation

Published November 6, 2026

Community translation improves access by carrying meaning and context across languages while respecting the limits of volunteer work.

Translation can open a conversation to people who would otherwise be excluded. It is more than replacing words; it requires attention to tone, context, and purpose.

Explain who the translation serves. A short summary for orientation may require a different approach from a policy, guide, or personal statement.

Preserve meaning over literal structure. Natural language helps readers understand the intent without losing important qualifications.

Identify uncertainty. Names, cultural references, technical terms, and regional expressions may need explanation or a second review.

Credit translators appropriately. Their work is expertise and should not disappear behind an anonymous label when public acknowledgment is appropriate.

Do not assume one translation represents every speaker. Language variation and local usage may matter to the people reading the result.

Translation strengthens participation when it is planned early. It helps members contribute to shared knowledge rather than receiving information only after every decision is already made.
