The Role of Community Summary Editors
Published November 6, 2026
Summary editors help communities preserve useful conversations by identifying decisions, themes, open questions, and context without flattening disagreement.
A summary editor turns a long conversation into a useful record. The work requires judgment because a summary should be concise without becoming misleading.
Understand the purpose and audience. A project record, newcomer overview, and public update may need different levels of detail.
Separate decisions from discussion. Readers should be able to see what is settled and what remains open.
Represent disagreement fairly. A summary should not create a false consensus simply because one view was easier to write.
Preserve important context. Dates, constraints, sources, and next steps can determine how a decision should be understood later.
Protect personal information. Remove details that do not need to remain visible and ask permission before reusing personal stories.
Invite corrections. A summary becomes more trustworthy when contributors can point out omissions or unclear wording.
