The Role of Community Mentors
Published November 6, 2026
Mentors help members build confidence by sharing context, asking useful questions, and supporting independent decisions.
A mentor does not need to know everything or solve every problem. The role is to help another person develop understanding and confidence over time.
Begin by learning the member’s goal. Advice becomes more useful when it reflects what someone is actually trying to accomplish.
Share reasoning, not only answers. Explaining how you approached a decision helps the other person handle a similar situation later.
Ask questions that encourage reflection. A mentor can help someone identify options without taking control of the choice.
Set clear boundaries. Mentoring should respect time, privacy, expertise, and the difference between guidance and professional services.
Encourage connections to other resources and people. A healthy mentoring relationship expands a member’s support network rather than making one person indispensable.
Good mentors eventually become less necessary for the specific problem at hand. Their success is measured by the member’s growing ability to act independently.
