How to Support Community Shared Goals
Published November 6, 2026
Shared goals become useful when they are concrete enough to guide action and flexible enough to include different motivations and contributions.
A shared goal helps a community coordinate without requiring every member to have the same personal reason for participating. It creates direction while preserving variety.
Describe the intended outcome. Members should understand what improvement, resource, relationship, or learning the community wants to create.
Name who benefits. A clear audience helps the group evaluate which ideas serve the purpose and which do not.
Break the goal into manageable stages. Smaller milestones make progress visible and create more opportunities to contribute.
Recognize different roles. Research, organizing, communication, review, care, and maintenance may all support the same result.
Review the goal when circumstances change. Updating a goal can be responsible learning rather than evidence that the original plan failed.
Shared goals build alignment through clarity. They help members connect their individual effort to something the community can recognize together.
