How to Share Community Credit

Published November 6, 2026

Fair credit makes contributions visible without reducing collaboration to a competition for recognition or status.

Many community results depend on work that is easy to overlook: editing, welcoming, testing, translating, organizing, and offering encouragement.

Define contribution broadly. Credit should include the different forms of effort that made the result possible, not only the most public role.

Ask people how they want to be named. Some members prefer public recognition, while others value privacy or a collective acknowledgment.

Be accurate and specific. Describe what someone contributed rather than using vague praise that makes the work difficult to understand.

Share credit early. Recognition during the process can help people feel that their effort matters before a project is complete.

Avoid creating a fixed hierarchy. A community can recognize leadership while still respecting essential contributions that do not carry formal titles.

Thoughtful credit strengthens future collaboration. People are more likely to contribute when they trust that their work will be seen and represented fairly.
