How to Create Community Welcome Guides

Published November 6, 2026

A useful welcome guide gives new members context, clear first steps, and confidence that they can participate at their own pace.

A welcome guide should answer the questions people have before they feel ready to join a conversation. It is an invitation, not an examination.

Explain the community purpose in plain language. Tell readers what kinds of relationships, learning, or projects the space supports.

Show the main routes through the community. A short list of topics, events, and help channels is easier to use than an exhaustive directory.

Describe the first step. Reading a discussion, introducing a goal, or asking a simple question can all be valid ways to begin.

Include practical expectations. Mention language, accessibility, privacy, and respectful disagreement without making the guide sound like a list of punishments.

Review the guide with someone new. Their questions will reveal assumptions that established members may no longer notice.

Keep the guide current. A welcome page builds trust when its links, descriptions, and examples match the community people actually enter.
