How to Create Community Topic Maps
Published November 6, 2026
A topic map helps members understand how discussions connect and where to begin exploring a large subject.
When a community covers many related subjects, members may not know where to start. A topic map gives them a visual or written overview of the main areas and how those areas connect.
Begin with the questions members ask most often. These questions reveal the paths people are already trying to follow.
Group topics by meaning rather than by the order in which they were published. Clear categories make exploration easier for newcomers.
Show beginner and advanced routes. Some members need an overview, while others want to move directly toward detailed practice or specialized discussion.
Use short descriptions. Each topic should explain what members can learn or do there without requiring them to open every link.
Review the map as the community grows. New topics may need a place, while old categories may become confusing or repetitive.
A topic map does not replace conversation. It gives members a starting point and helps useful discussions become easier to discover.
