How to Create Community Review Guidelines
Published November 6, 2026
Review guidelines help contributors and reviewers share expectations about purpose, scope, tone, evidence, and useful next steps.
Review is easier when everyone understands what kind of feedback is wanted. Guidelines reduce uncertainty without turning every exchange into a rigid evaluation.
State the review purpose. Accuracy, clarity, accessibility, structure, tone, and practical usefulness may each require different attention.
Define the audience and context. A reviewer can give better feedback when they know who the work is for and how it will be used.
Encourage specific observations. Pointing to a sentence, step, or experience is more useful than offering a general judgment.
Separate requirements from preferences. Contributors should be able to distinguish a necessary correction from a possible style choice.
Protect ownership. Reviewers offer information and suggestions; the creator remains responsible for deciding what to change.
Good guidelines make revision safer. They help people improve work while keeping feedback connected to learning and shared purpose.
