How to Create Community Project Briefs
Published November 6, 2026
A concise project brief aligns people around purpose, audience, scope, responsibilities, and the first useful milestone.
A project brief gives contributors enough shared context to begin without requiring them to read every planning conversation. It is an invitation to act with understanding.
State the purpose first. Explain what the project is trying to make possible and why the community believes it matters.
Describe the audience and outcome. Contributors make better choices when they know who the work should serve and what a useful result looks like.
Set an initial scope. A limited first version creates room for learning and makes it easier to recognize progress.
List the main roles and decisions. People should know how they can help, who coordinates, and which questions remain open.
Include constraints and assumptions. Time, access, language, budget, and existing commitments may shape the plan.
Keep the brief current. A short updated document is more valuable than a detailed plan that no longer reflects the project.
