How to Create Useful Community Progress Updates
Published November 6, 2026
Progress updates keep members informed by showing what changed, what remains open, and how people can contribute next.
Progress updates connect community effort to visible movement. They do not need to be long. They need to answer what happened, what is next, and where members can help or ask questions.
Start with a short summary. A clear opening sentence helps readers decide whether the update affects them.
Separate completed work from ongoing work. This makes progress easier to understand and prevents plans from appearing finished before they are ready.
Mention obstacles honestly. Explaining a delay or change can build trust when it includes what the team is doing in response.
Use links and examples. Members should be able to find the relevant guide, discussion, project page, or decision record without searching through the whole community.
Include a practical next step when one exists. It may be feedback, testing, a question, or simply waiting for the next update.
Keep a consistent rhythm. Regular updates reduce uncertainty and help members see how separate contributions fit together.
