How to Create Community Privacy Guidance

Published November 6, 2026

Privacy guidance helps members understand what information is shared, who can access it, and how they can protect their own boundaries.

Privacy is easier to respect when expectations are visible. Members should not have to guess whether a message, image, profile detail, or personal story may travel beyond its original setting.

Explain what is public and what is limited. Use plain language to describe posts, private messages, reports, recordings, and archives.

Collect only what is needed. A community should not request personal information simply because it might be convenient later.

Tell members how to change or remove information where possible. Clear options help people maintain control over their participation.

Ask permission before reusing contributions. A comment shared in a small conversation may not be intended for a public guide or promotional message.

Describe exceptions carefully. Safety, legal, or operational requirements may affect privacy, but members deserve an honest explanation.

Privacy guidance builds confidence. It shows that the community treats personal boundaries as part of good design rather than an afterthought.
