How to Create Community Learning Guides
Published November 6, 2026
A learning guide helps members move from a clear starting point to useful practice through simple explanations and flexible steps.
A learning guide should make progress easier to imagine. It gives members enough structure to begin while leaving room for different goals, backgrounds, and speeds.
Start with the learner’s question. A guide is more useful when it responds to a real need instead of presenting information without context.
Explain the basics before adding detail. Clear definitions and a short overview help people understand why the later steps matter.
Show more than one route. Reading, practice, discussion, and observation can all support learning in different ways.
Include a small activity. Members understand more deeply when they can try an idea and compare it with their own experience.
Name common obstacles. Guidance about what to do when a step is confusing helps people continue without feeling that they have failed.
A strong learning guide creates independence. It gives members direction while encouraging them to make decisions and ask better questions.
