How to Create Community Decision Paths
Published November 6, 2026
A clear decision path shows members how a question moves from discussion to choice, implementation, review, and possible revision.
Members participate more confidently when they understand how decisions are made. A decision path does not need to be complicated, but it should make important steps visible.
State the question clearly. People need to know what is being decided and what is outside the current discussion.
Identify who is affected and who decides. Different roles may contribute information, advice, consent, or final authority.
Share relevant criteria and constraints. Safety, access, cost, capacity, and community purpose can all shape the available options.
Set a useful input period. Members should know when feedback is needed and how it will be considered.
Record the decision and next step. A short explanation prevents confusion and helps people understand what happens after the choice.
Include a review point when appropriate. Decisions can remain accountable without pretending that circumstances will never change.
