How to Create Community Annual Reviews

Published November 6, 2026

An annual review helps a community understand its progress, recognize contributions, and choose priorities for the next period.

An annual review should be more than a list of activity. It gives members a chance to understand what changed, what was learned, and what deserves attention next.

Describe the purpose of the review. Members should know whether it will focus on impact, accessibility, finances, relationships, projects, or a combination.

Use both numbers and stories. Participation counts can show scale, while member experiences explain quality and meaning.

Acknowledge limits in the information. Not every important result can be measured easily, and incomplete data should not be presented as certainty.

Credit the work behind the year. Include volunteers, contributors, partners, and quiet maintenance that made visible outcomes possible.

Invite members to identify priorities. A review is more useful when it leads to shared choices rather than a report that no one can influence.

An annual review creates continuity. It helps future organizers learn from the past and gives members a grounded view of where the community is going.
