How to Create Community Action Lists

Published November 6, 2026

A clear action list turns a discussion into manageable next steps without overwhelming the people involved.

Community conversations often produce good ideas but no clear next step. An action list helps members turn shared understanding into practical progress.

Start by identifying the outcome. Explain what the group wants to improve, create, or decide. A visible outcome makes it easier to choose which tasks matter.

Keep tasks small and specific. “Improve the guide” is difficult to act on, while “review the welcome section and list three unclear steps” gives someone a realistic starting point.

Assign ownership without making one person responsible for everything. Different members can research, write, review, communicate, or test the result.

Add timing carefully. A suggested date can create momentum, but unrealistic deadlines create pressure and disappointment. Ask what the available capacity actually is.

Review the list together. Remove duplicate tasks, combine related work, and mark which items are optional or dependent on another decision.

An action list is useful when it creates clarity, not when it becomes another source of administration. Keep it visible, current, and connected to the community’s purpose.
