How to Create a Community Welcome Week
Published November 6, 2026
A welcome week gives newcomers several simple ways to understand the community and begin participating without pressure.
A welcome week is a short series of activities designed to help new members understand a community. It can include introductions, simple questions, resource guides, and opportunities to meet people with shared interests.
Start with a clear purpose. The goal is not to make newcomers complete a checklist, but to help them feel oriented and confident enough to return.
Offer one small activity each day or across several days. A short prompt, a guided tour, or a beginner-friendly discussion gives people different ways to participate.
Explain the culture through examples. Show how members ask questions, share recommendations, handle disagreement, and protect privacy. Practical examples are easier to remember than abstract rules.
Keep the schedule flexible. Some members will join late or miss several activities. Summaries and recordings can help them participate without feeling that the opportunity has passed.
Invite existing members to welcome newcomers, but do not make new people perform introductions publicly. Belonging should not depend on revealing personal information.
End with a simple path forward. Point members toward ongoing discussions, local pages, chat rooms, or resources that match their interests. A good welcome week opens a door rather than creating another obligation.
