How to Create a Community Welcome Guide
Published November 6, 2026
A useful welcome guide gives newcomers context, confidence, and a clear first step into the community.
A welcome guide is often the first piece of community content a newcomer reads. It should answer the questions people have before they feel comfortable participating: What is this place for, where should I begin, and what kind of behavior is expected?
Start with a short explanation of the community’s purpose. Avoid broad promises that could describe any website. Explain the conversations, interests, or support the community is designed to provide. A specific purpose helps visitors decide whether they have found the right place.
Give newcomers a simple first action. They might browse a discussion, introduce themselves, read the guidelines, or ask a question. Too many choices can create uncertainty, so highlight one easy next step and provide optional links afterward.
Explain the culture through examples. Describe how members disagree, share resources, protect privacy, and welcome different experience levels. Concrete examples are easier to understand than a long list of abstract values.
Keep the guide current. Review links, screenshots, names, and instructions regularly. Ask new members whether anything was confusing during their first visit. Their experience is often the best test of whether the guide works.
A strong welcome guide should feel like an invitation rather than an exam. It helps people understand the space while making clear that they do not need to know everything before they belong.
