How to Create a Community Ethics Guide
Published November 6, 2026
An ethics guide helps members understand how a community approaches honesty, responsibility, privacy, and care.
An ethics guide gives a community language for the choices that shape trust. Rules may describe what is prohibited, while an ethics guide explains the principles behind responsible participation.
Start with the situations members are likely to face. Sharing information, recommending services, handling disagreement, protecting privacy, and correcting mistakes are practical places to begin.
Use clear examples. Explain what honest attribution looks like, how to acknowledge uncertainty, and when information should not be shared. Concrete examples help members apply principles in real conversations.
Include responsibility for organizers and leaders. Ethical participation is not only a member obligation. People with access, authority, or moderation responsibilities should understand how their decisions affect others.
Make room for complexity. A guide should acknowledge that values can conflict, such as openness and privacy or speed and accuracy. Explain how people can ask for help when the right choice is not obvious.
Review the guide with different members. Newcomers, experienced contributors, moderators, and people with different access needs may notice different gaps. Update the guide when the community learns something important.
An ethics guide is useful when it supports judgment rather than replacing it. It gives people a shared foundation for making careful decisions together.
