How to Build Community Project Roadmaps
Published November 6, 2026
A project roadmap gives a community a shared view of direction, milestones, dependencies, and room for changing priorities.
A roadmap helps members understand where a project may go without pretending that every future detail is already decided. It connects a goal with a sequence of useful checkpoints.
Start with the outcome. A roadmap should make clear what the project is trying to improve, create, or learn.
Group work into meaningful stages. Research, design, testing, launch, and review may each require different kinds of contribution.
Show dependencies. Members can coordinate more effectively when they know which decisions or tasks need to happen before others.
Mark uncertainty honestly. A future idea, tentative date, or untested assumption should not look like a fixed promise.
Include review points. The roadmap should give the community opportunities to adjust scope or direction based on what it learns.
A useful roadmap creates orientation without rigidity. It helps members see how their work connects while preserving the ability to respond to new information.
